Notes for Phillip BETT | ||||||||||||||
Marriage Licence Peterborough 23 Jan 1723/24 (held at NCRO) Phillip Bett of Ringstead, husbandman and Mary Wakelin (damaged) (from BTs) of Cranford St John Bound Phillip Bett and White Bett of Ringstead, husbandman. Married Higham Ferrers or Cranford St John 1750 Window Tax (NCRO) Philip Bett 14 Windows at Ringstead. Tax 9s 0d. Window Tax started 1696 - replaced Hearth Tax. Each household paid a basic 2 shillings, those between 10-20 windows paid a further 8 shillings. After 1747 households with between 10-14 windows paid 6 pence per window on top of the old basic 2 shillings and those between 15-19 paid 9 pence, those above that paid one shilling per window. In 1825 all houses with fewer than 8 windows were exempted. Tax abolished 1851. (Pauline Saul, The Family Historian's Enquire Within, p. 247) Obviously Philip Bett lived in quite a substantial house, but for window tax it was who lived in the house rather than the owner who paid. Must look for a will for Philip. Died 1768. | ||||||||||||||
