| Graham broke his thigh and had severe head injuries in an accident at Wicksteed Park, Kettering when he was 10 years old. He and David were on a big swing in a triangular shape with a wooden base. Graham was in the middle, David at one end working it up. A youth jumped on the other end and took it so high that Graham fell off. He lay under the swing being hit on the head several times until a stranger stopped it with his back. David fell off but was uninjured. Graham was in Kettering General Hospital for six weeks. He was expected to be unconscious for some time but woke up the following morning and asked for a cooked breakfast. But his head injuries impeded him at school for several years after that.
