Notes for Lilian SMITH |
Very small woman, under 5 foot tall. The `perfect' grandma. She cared for us at Overstone Solarium in the Summer. She cared for us back home in Wellingborough. She cooked a stew on her open hearth stove at home in Park Road. As the week progressed and the ingredients matured, by Saturday it was a delicious wealth of gravy, meat, vegetables and sheer enjoyment. Nan was always a joy to be with. Yes she made us cut the grass, peel the potatoes for dinner and do our chores. In the Summer we picked blackberries and she made jam. Our favourite pudding was blackberry and apple pie. She always smiled at us and was always pleased to see us. She used to sing to us at Overstone at night. Our favourite song was 'Galway Bay'. 'If you ever go across the sea to Ireland, it may be at the closing of your day, we will sit and watch the moon rise over Cladagh, and see the sun go down on Galway Bay!' The bestest person in the whole wide world! |
