Family story: William John left home aged 12 because the family was so large. Went to London, living in haylofts, etc. Joined up with a builder and eventually went to Irthlingborough, Northants. Lodged with the Spencers and married Charlotte Grace Spencer, their daughter. Worked for London Brick Company as a cement worker - built large chimneys.
